North Marion High School Gym Seismic Retrofit

The North Marion School District utilized grant money awarded by the State of Oregon through the Seismic Rehabilitation Grant Program (SRGP) to seismically retrofit the High School Gymnasium and basement spaces.

Through the course of the retrofit, the basement was reconfigured to allow new CMU walls and ceiling sheathing to be installed. In the gym, the exterior concrete walls had new steel strongbacks installed to offer additional support, with these strongbacks continuing down into the basement to the foundation. Both the floor and roof of the gym received new plywood sheathing, with the sheathing at the floor being applied to the ceiling in the basement. Additional wood framing and required attachments were added to the exterior walls as needed to accommodate seismic loads. Finally, the existing bowstring trusses were reinforced to support both the current gravity load and the potential additional forces that would be generated by a seismic event.
