Jacksonville Fire Station Seismic Retrofit and Building Addition

Jacksonville, Oregon is a historic city that played a significant role in the early settlement of the Rogue River Valley. Accordingly, the city has been listed as a National Historic Landmark, and strict standards over new development and impacts to historic buildings are in place. The City received funding to perform a retrofit of their historic, URM fire station through the SRGP and dedicated separate funding to the project for a second-story addition and remodeling of the first floor. The station is a historic resource for the town and is located within the historic downtown core.

Its location and importance to the community necessitated that the architecture of the building complement the rest of the built environment. It was important to the City to increase the building's resiliency during earthquakes while providing additional space needed for the fire personnel to perform their duties, maintain their equipment, and be safe from harmful contaminants. While the seismic retrofit component of this project posed challenges, the largest hurdle was designing a project that would respect the history of the community and comply with the design requirements to ensure its continued place as a cultural resource.
