Coquille Fire Department
ZCS provided grant application support and structural design services for the seismic rehabilitation effort at the Coquille Fire Station. Constructed in 1962, the original building was constructed from cast-in-place concrete walls, a concrete slab floor, and a concrete beam structure, with a roof made of wood glulam and wood decking.
An existing concrete hose tower presented an interesting challenge for the team during the design of the retrofit. The tower did not have a lateral system, and this became an issue with the large loads we encountered due to the location of the project and the heavy, cast-in-place concrete walls. We were able to tie this structure to the diaphragm and use those ties as cross ties to the walls of the building. The ties structurally supported the hose tower’s lateral load as well as provided contentious cross ties to strengthen the diaphragm.
