Klamath County School District
As the fifth seismic rehabilitation project completed for Klamath County School District, ZCS retrofitted the primary and auxiliary gymnasiums at Henley High School.
Close collaboration between ZCS engineers and the contractor was crucial to accomplish this seismic rehabilitation as the existing roof above the primary gym was made of a heavy composite pearlite requiring demolition down to framing joists. Complex construction techniques and sequencing were necessary to support the perimeter walls and carefully time the installation of new strongback columns to be craned in before installing the new roof.
Due to the invasive nature of the retrofit the gymnasium received mostly new interior finishes, however, Modoc Contracting was able to remove and store existing panels previously painted with a large, wall-length mural. After structural upgrades were made the original panels were able to be re-installed. Additionally, bleachers being used as a partition between the gym and multi-use space were not seismically braced. As part of the retrofit scope we were able to frame in a new wall and significantly reduce the height of the bleachers creating a permanent and seismically-safe partition between the spaces.
The auxiliary gym, also used as a weight room, was made of heavy SCR brick walls that were short and did not extend full height. The retrofit design included roof removal and new roof sheathing, strengthening of existing glulam beams, installation of new inset shear walls and in-plane and out-of-plane connections to provide a continuous load path.
